Raising a stubborn child is one of the more difficult challenges of parenting. When I was in college, one of my part-time jobs was babysitting a stubborn child.
During the interview with her mother, I was told that J. was strong-willed. Mom was frustrated and didn’t have any suggestions for how to deal with her stubbornness. With all of the confidence that a nineteen-year-old woman could possibly possess, I was sure that, with all of my years of childcare experience, I would be able to help.
Boy, did J. prove me wrong.

At every opportunity, J. would argue with me. At four-years-old, she could debate me about the color of the sky for an hour. I would walk into the kitchen to put lunch together, and step back into the living room five minutes later to find a crayon masterpiece on the walls.
When nap time rolled around, she would lay in her bed and scream like she was being beaten. Once, I had to run to the store for what I hoped would be a quick trip, with J. in tow. I ended up carrying her out of the store, surfboard style, as she called me names for not buying her a cupcake at the bakery.

What I didn’t Understand then Was that all behavior is communication.
When J. was fiercely defending her right to color on the walls, she was trying to tell me that she needed a creative outlet. When she debated the color of the sky, she just wanted to be right. When she didn’t get what she wanted at the store, she needed some control over her life.
Neither I, nor J’s mom, were being bad caregivers; we just failed to realize that J’s personality was strong and that she needed to be in a leadership position. Kids may also seem stubborn because they are overwhelmed or simply because they are having a bad day.

Today, being blessed with 3 stubborn children of my own, I have learned some ways that I can help my kids get the outcome they need, while I still get the results I need.
Here are five ways I’ve found to help your stubborn child.
Give choices
Instead of asking your stubborn child to get dressed, which can overwhelm someone to the point of non-compliance, lay out two clothing choices. “Please choose an outfit to wear,” gives those with strong personalities the feeling that they are in control, and helps those who may feel overwhelmed by narrowing their choices down to just two.
You as the parent are happy because kiddo isn’t dressed in purple pants with a yellow top and mismatched socks.

Help the communication
Many times, a child may seem stubborn because they can’t communicate what’s wrong. A child who refuses to eat dinner may have sensory issues, or may merely have a bit of tummy trouble and not feel like eating tonight.
Asking questions can help to narrow down these issues to get to the heart of the matter. However, because young children don’t have all of the tools to effectively communicate more complex needs, you may need to guide them. Keep the questions light, with a conversational tone, so that kiddo doesn’t feel like she is in trouble; if she does, she will get defensive or stop talking altogether.
Explain why
When I grew up, “because I said so,” was the answer I always received when I asked why. I wasn’t overly stubborn, so this response usually just made me mad. However, with a stubborn child, hearing “because I said so,” is a guarantee of a quick trip to temper tantrum island.

In this case, your child isn’t being stubborn because they don’t like you or they are trying to be difficult; they simply want a deeper understanding of why something has to be done.
A friend of mine has an autistic son who refuses to do anything if the only reason to do so is that it’s socially acceptable. To him, that’s not a valid reason. If she said “because I said so,” he would just not comply with her request.
In that situation, she needs to explain to him why she’s asking him to do a particular task. It’s just the way his brain works.
Keep It Simple
Kids need everything in small doses. When you are trying to find out what triggers your child’s stubbornness, start small. Don’t ask questions for thirty minutes if they refuse to put on their shoes. If you don’t have the answer after a few questions, you have to realize that you are not going to find the solution today, and hope for better results tomorrow. Keeping things simple helps keep your child from feeling overwhelmed or interrogated.
Also make sure that as you make changes to help adjust behavior, you remember the need for small doses. Making accommodations does not mean that stubbornness will end tomorrow. There may be a long road ahead of you.
Get Help When You Need It
Sometimes, parents are not great at communicating with their kids. That’s not a fault in the parent; childhood behavior and communication is something that people study for years, and still don’t consider themselves experts.
There wasn’t a Parenting Fairy who gifted you with the right tools for parenting upon the birth of your child. You are going to stumble occasionally.
When that happens, you may need help. A behavioral therapist that specializes in children may be able to help you and your child communicate better. Seeking help does not make you a failure, or label your child “difficult.”
It merely means that you have reached the point where you realize there is an issue that you alone cannot solve. It happens to all parents at some point.
When you take the time to help a stubborn child, you will find genuinely unexpected rewards.
A child who tested your patience can become loving and compliant when you understand what is triggering the stubbornness. Helping them learn how to communicate better will ease the journey you will be taking together, and will surely make things more comfortable as you navigate the messy teen years, which will happen sooner than you think!
I really hope this helps and good luck 🙂

Walking into the Dollar Store and exploring all the fun items and great deals is always a lot of fun. There are so many great ways to save money as you wander the aisles. However, among all of the bargains you can find, there are a few things that you should never buy at the Dollar Store.
Shampoo And Conditioner
Many times the shampoo and conditioner that you find at the Dollar Store are often watered down so the quality of the product isn’t quite up to par. You’re better off buying well-known discount brands at a grocery or drug store. They have been found to carry fake products in the past as well, unfortunately.

Batteries
The batteries sold at Dollar Stores are usually not well made and they won’t last as long as brand name batteries purchased elsewhere. Skip them and splurge on the good stuff.
Cooking Utensils
Often the cooking utensils that you can find at discount stores are made of plastic or an unsafe coated metal. While this may seem like a steal for items you don’t use often, there are sometimes dangerous chemicals in the plastic and metals that could possibly leach into your food. It’s not worth the savings.

Pet Food
Pet food ingredients in dollar store formulations may be low quality and could cause your pets to become sick. Also, it can be difficult to tell if the pet food you are purchasing has been sitting on shelves for an extended period of time.
Extension Cords and Power Strips
Because of the manufacturing quality of many of the Dollar Store items, electrical products are probably not a safe purchase. Malfunctioning extension cords and power strips can become a fire hazard.
Trash Bags and Plastic Baggies
Trash bags, sandwich bags, and similar products from the Dollar Store are not a great choice due to their quality. They tear easily and closures don’t always work well – just not a great purchase.

Jewelry
Most of the jewelry found at discount stores are not well made. It will break easily, discolor quickly, and items made of metal can cause your skin to discolor, as well. Save your money and invest in a couple of better quality, classic jewelry pieces that will go with multiple wardrobe looks. Besides, they don’t have anything nice anyway.
Toys
There have been reports in recent years that lead has been found in some of the toys at Dollar Stores. Also, the toys often break easily, resulting in a choking hazard for little ones. So this is a big one. Just don’t buy that junk!!
Food Items
Expiration dates on the food items at a Dollar Store can be questionable, plus the package sizes are often smaller than in standard stores. Even if you’re able to find brand name, safe foods, you might be spending more for them by volume than in a grocery store.
Makeup and Beauty Products
The ingredients and shelf life on the makeup and beauty products found at the Dollar Store are questionable at best. You run the risk of using toxic compounds on your skin or having reactions to unknown ingredients.
Though there are many things at the Dollar Store that are a great deal, take the time to consider your purchases. Quality and package size, combined with dangerous ingredients could turn those fabulous bargains into a really bad deal.
So just be considerate of the things you buy and stay away from these troubled products!

My Home is a Disaster! That’s what we all like to say but is it really that bad?
Believe me, I get it.. I have three kids and a husband who’s like a kid. They leave a trail of disaster and slime behind them no matter how hard I try to clean it up.
It’s just life and it happens to the best of us.
But there are ways to clean it up and make it less frustrating.
Even as all of your efforts are destroyed by your family as they move through like a tornado, there are things you can do to minimize the disaster area and I am going to show you how. { You have to keep a sense of humor about these things or it will drive you crazy ? }
[wc_highlight color=”yellow” class=””]Do You Want some Cleaning Freebies?[/wc_highlight] My Friends over at Pulling Curls Have got some great ones that will help you Kill Your Clutter! We are going to simplify your life together so even when there’s a big mess, it won’t feel like you’re absolutely drowning in clutter.

You need to tackle the mess with Strategy. You’d think cleaning would be simple enough but approaching it with a very specific plan and doing some parts of it each day will really simplify things and it will help you get it done.
So let’s begin..
Planning The Cleanup
Make an appointment with yourself each day and keep it! Write it down on a schedule and carve out that time specifically for this task.
If you have a set time and you know exactly what you’re supposed to be doing, this will help you get the job done. That’s how you begin, Just with a plan.

Carve out a bit of time each day for a week or two and tackle the clutter. Maybe it’s 15 minutes a day, maybe an hour { the longer you spend each day, the quicker you can be done obviously }

Clear The Clutter
There are spots in your home that gather junk. You know that counter or table or shelf and once it starts you just keep piling stuff there. It becomes the designated area for your crap and everybody knows it so they keep putting junk there too.
So the first thing you want to do is begin with these areas. Remove all the clutter and clear it completely. Let everyone know that it’s a clutter-free zone from now on.
This act alone will help tremendously in making you feel better about your space.
The first two or three days during your appointed time you can work on this task.
Tackle Bigger Projects in Small Steps Too
I know there are some hidden places in your home that seem like a horrible abyss of clutter and crap. We all have them, Mine is the hall closet and it’s what nightmares are made of. I have 3 kids who just throw their stuff in there.
But the easiest way to deal with spaces like this is with baby steps. Your plan of attack should be just like the Cluttery spots we talked about before.
Just take 15 or 30-minute increments each day and address a part of the mess. Set a timer too. It will make you feel accomplished and like your mountain of mess is slowly receding. It’s a good feeling each time that little buzzer goes off.
Be Brutal About What You Through Out
Do you really need all that stuff? I know it’s hard to let go of things, believe me, but sometimes you just have to brutal and let go.
You can donate some of it or maybe even sell some of it on Ebay and make a little extra money. But if that ends up being an excuse for you to keep it and you know you won’t do it then toss it out!
Just LET GO. A fun way to do this is to get a garbage bag and set a timer for 15 minutes. Go from room to room and fill it up completely. Then get rid of it.
Be Mindful
In the future be mindful of the stuff you bring into your home. Ask yourself if you really need it and be mindful of bringing in things that you know will end up in a pile somewhere. Maybe find a better way of disposing of it.
Make It A Routine
Finally, you should make these cleaning habits a routine so that clutter doesn’t get out of control again. You can schedule two, fifteen-minute increments a week and tackle any new clutter that’s found its way into a new space. Because clutter seems to migrate once you clear it from one area. A new clutter spot will pop up and if you have an appointed time weekly you can keep things under control.
I hope this was helpful and I hope you find your home more comfortable and less messy day by day 🙂
If you loved this post please share it with another messy mama who could really use a strategy to help get the job done. You can share with the buttons to the left or with the Pinterest image below. Thanks so much!!

A Few Good Tips On Paid Survey Sites
I wanted to add a few things you need to know. First, you always need to be honest because they will ask the same thing many times, and if your answers are inconsistent they will boot you off their panels.
Also, in the beginning, they will be trying to figure out a lot of details about you and your life for their survey purposes. You will be given a lot of smaller surveys that during this time.
After You’ve taken about 10 surveys, you will be given surveys that pay $5+ often. It doesn’t take too long so be patient and answer your questions honestly and you will be able to make good money online with surveys. It does work.
Lastly, there are some sites that are scammers so I highly recommend you stick to the tried/true and tested ones listed above. These are reviewed, reputable companies who payout survey takers on a monthly basis.
So that’s it! You really can make a good bit of money doing surveys. You can pay several bills a month or use it for activities or gifts. Just try it and see. Enjoy!!
It would really make my day if you would share this post with your friends! You can share with the Pinterest images below or buttons to the left or below. Thanks, You’re awesome!!
