How to Deal with Visitors after Childbirth

How to Deal with Visitors after Childbirth

I’m just going to come right out and say it. Getting visitors after having a baby is not fun.

Of course, everyone wants to see but you’re tired, excited, and overwhelmed.

It can be ok for about 15 minutes but after that, it’s too much, especially if you have a big family and everyone wants to come.

It can feel like you’re having to put on a show and it’s stressful for the staff too, not to mention your poor little newborn.

Your family will have plenty of time to see the babe in the near future.

But this is a delicate situation. Sometimes family feels put off when you ask them not to come.

Below are some easy ways you can deal with this situation.

Just Say No

For whatever reason, if you decide you’re not ready for visitors, it’s okay to say no.

Do not sacrifice your peace of mind and family bonding time for the sake of being polite.

It can be tough telling family and friends to stay away, but a simple statement on social media or through text can let others know that you need
privacy right now, that you’re taking personal time, and not accepting visitors yet.

Let them know you’ll reach out soon and leave it at that.

**Must Read: Labor Just Started: What You Need To Know Now

It is a good idea to let everyone know before the big day if you can. That way they will all know what to expect and none of them will plan to come to the hospital in the first place.

how to deal with visitors after childbirth #childbirthtips #pregnancytips #newbaby

You’re under no obligation to please other people right now and I give you full permission to be selfish on baby’s behalf 😉 Not that you need anyone’s permission.

If you have a family that is pushing back, give your spouse permission to play ‘bad cop’. Be firm in your decision, take the amount of time you need and you won’t regret it one bit.

Set Clear Boundaries for Visitors

If you do decide to have visitors you need to make sure everyone is on the same page.

To make visitation as easy as possible it’s important to establish clear boundaries before the baby comes, and reinforce them when your babe arrives.

If there is any conflict or concern about who will be at the hospital, it’s best to address that before delivery.

Decide who will be in the delivery room and make it clear beforehand.

Make tough decisions now to avoid future problems; you want a peaceful environment for yourself and your little one.

Come up with a plan for what visitation looks like at the hospital, and then at home.

Although you have total freedom to change your mind, having clear boundaries in place ensures everyone knows how to meet your needs.

Remember, people want to visit and be there to support you because they care, but that doesn’t make you obligated.

Limit Visiting Time

Now let’s talk about home visits.

The first several weeks when you’re home will be so tiresome. Your hormones will hit you like a tidal wave and you’ll be tired, happy, crying, and full of every other imaginable emotion.

Trust me, it’s intense (been there three times myself) and you’ll only know what I mean once you have experienced it.

The first several weeks are also an important time for family bonding, Mom’s healing, and the baby’s transition into the world.

Your first priority is taking care of baby’s needs ( and yours ).

how to deal with visitors after childbirth #childbirthtips #pregnancytips #newbaby

Limit visitors to 30 minutes at a time and spread out visits.  You don’t have to do all those visits on the same day.

Bringing baby home and adapting to this new person and new schedule can be exhausting for a recovering Mom; just holding a
conversation can be a challenge.

Keeping visitation short ensures you aren’t overdoing it and baby doesn’t get overwhelmed. Limiting that time frees you up to tackle the important things like feeding, diaper changes, and bonding.

Ask your spouse to help keep everyone on schedule and don’t feel bad when you have to say Goodbye when those 30 minutes are up.

You’re doing what’s best for you and your family, and that is the priority right now.

Allow Close Friends and Family Only

During the early days, I highly recommend only allowing close family and friends to visit.

Choose people who are supportive, non-judgmental, and who will respect your wishes during this time.

Anyone who will disrupt the peaceful and healing environment you need right now doesn’t need to be there.

It can be a big help having someone stay with you after baby is born but if you do, choose your help wisely.

Let People Help

Most people are well-intentioned, want to help you during this time, and are looking for a way to contribute and be part of this special time in your life.

Let them. Make a to-do list and if someone asks if they can help, give them a job.

how to deal with visitors after childbirth #childbirthtips #pregnancytips #newbaby

Simple tasks like dishes, taking out the trash, cleaning the bathroom, or helping with the other kids can be a life-saver for you right now.

Let them help you and thank them for it.

The more people are kept busy the less ‘handsy’ they get with baby and less likely they are to overstay their welcome.

The best thing you can do to prevent this is seeing your doc and getting great  Prenatal Care.

They monitor your symptoms and health at every appointment for a variety of reasons, but very specifically for this.

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, especially during pregnancy, can be a warning sign of bigger issues; such as Preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia usually occurs after the 20th week of pregnancy, in the last trimester, and often presents as a sudden increase in blood pressure.

One of the major problems that occur with high blood pressure in pregnancy is a decrease in blood flow to the placenta. It’s very bad news.

signs of preeclampsia that you need to know #childbirth #pregnancy #preeclampsia #pregnancydangersigns #miscarriage

When the placenta doesn’t get enough blood, the baby doesn’t get enough oxygen or the essential nutrients it needs to thrive.

High blood pressure is dangerous for both you and your baby and should be taken seriously.

When you have high blood pressure you have a greater risk of infection, and can lead to prematurity and the potential for future breathing problems.

Blurred Vision

Vision changes during pregnancy can be another serious sign of preeclampsia.

The most common visual changes are blurred vision, flashing lights, light sensitivity, auras, and spots.

signs of preeclampsia that you need to know #childbirth #pregnancy #preeclampsia #pregnancydangersigns #miscarriage

Vision changes can be an indication of cerebral edema (or swelling of the brain) and should be taken very seriously.

If you are experiencing vision changes during pregnancy I recommend you seek medical attention right away; DON’T WAIT.

Swelling

It’s not uncommon during pregnancy to experience swelling, especially in the feet during the last trimester.

However, severe swelling of any kind or swelling that occurs in the hands, face or around the eyes could be a sign of preeclampsia edema or a warning of other complications.

If you experience a rapid onset of fluid-retention, pitting or discoloration of the skin, it’s important to contact your provider right away.

Because of the complications associated with preeclampsia it’s important that you know the signs and symptoms and seek out care as early as possible.

Shortness of Breath

Experiencing shortness of breath can be a sign of elevated blood pressure or fluid collecting in the lungs, a rare but serious condition known as pulmonary edema.

Both of these can be a symptom of preeclampsia and should be discussed with your provider.

Combined with mental confusion, heightened anxiety, and a racing pulse, shortness of breath can be a sure sign of something going on.

Abdominal Pain

Mild stomach pain, cramps or discomfort is common during pregnancy especially during the first 12 weeks while your body is adjusting.

Most of the time mild pain is nothing to worry about. However, persistent abdominal pain or a sudden increase in pain should be checked out.

Preeclampsia can present as abdominal or stomach pain that usually occurs on the right side.

Vomiting combined with abdominal pain can be another serious sign of preeclampsia.

signs of preeclampsia that you need to know #childbirth #pregnancy #preeclampsia #pregnancydangersigns #miscarriage

If you are experiencing any pain that is severe or outside the norm talk to your healthcare provider right away.

Other signs of preeclampsia include sudden weight gain, low back pain, protein in the urine, increased reflexes, and nausea or vomiting.

Delivery is not the cure. Preeclampsia can occur after delivery too and puts Mom at risk.

Postpartum preeclampsia can lead to seizures, stroke, organ damage and even death.

Even after delivery, if you are experiencing high blood pressure or other symptoms, please get care right away.

You should take your health very seriously while pregnant and prenatal ( and postnatal ) care are an absolute must.

24 pregnancy symptoms that will surprise you!

Orgasms During Sleep

Let’s start with my favorite one! Many women have orgasms while sleeping during pregnancy. It’s very common and it happened to me all through my three pregnancies. FUN Right?! Sweet dreams mama!

**Have You taken a prenatal birth course yet? Don’t have time? Here’s the best Premium online birthing course and the first part of it’s totally free! You will learn absolutely everything you need to know and it will help tremendously so make sure you sign up. Lots Of Discharge

You’ll have lots of discharge usually beginning at the 6-week mark. Often so much that you need to wear panty liners. You’ll be leaking a lot, so keep a big stash with you at all times. This 300 pack is cheap and convenient.

Some Bleeding Is Possible

Speaking of Pantyliners, you may need them for bleeding too. Some bleeding in pregnancy can be normal.  I know it’s super scary but most of the time when a woman bleeds,  everything’s ok.

If you have heavy bleeding, however, you should contact your doc immediately.

Headaches And Lots Of Them

Headaches are a side effect of the huge hormonal fluctuations that women have during pregnancy and depending on your history with headaches they can be brutal.

Luckily Tylenol is safe during pregnancy but always talk to your doctor first.

Constipation

Not Being able to poop is another crappy pregnancy symptom that’s no fun. Your doc may prescribe some Miralax or something to help give your body a gentle push in the right direction.

Hot Flashes Aren’t Just For Menopause

We’ve all heard of hot flashes during menopause, but did you know they’re very common during pregnancy too? I would be freezing one minute and feel like I was on fire the next. It’s pretty intense.

This happens because of the hormonal rollercoaster your body is going through while your babe grows. All you can do is push through it, and open a window, even if there is snow on the ground outside.

Metallic Breath

Having bad breath is part of being pregnant and it’s not fun. You’ll have a metallic taste in your mouth non-stop for 9 months. Sort of tastes like pennies. All you can do is brush often and use mouthwash. Good luck with that.

Feeling Dizzy Is Common

Dizziness is another annoying side effect of being preggers. Some mornings you may wake up and feel like your world is spinning.

Or if you’ve sat for a while and you stand up it can happen. This is known as orthostatic hypotension and it’s caused by changes in your blood pressure. Just make sure you get up slowly and consider that you may feel dizzy so you don’t fall or faint.

All Day Sickness

Morning Sickness? Ha! Many who suffer from nausea have to deal with it all day long, and sometimes at night too. This was one of my first main pregnancy symptoms. I woke up every night around week five to go to the bathroom and when I would stand up I would feel a bit queasy. I just knew I was pregnant and I was.

Serious Food Aversions

What makes morning { All Day } sickness worse? Not wanting to eat because everything tastes like onions to you.

Food aversion is a pregnancy problem that you don’t hear about too often but it’s a huge issue. You feel constant nausea and you know the only thing that can really help is eating a good meal but everything seems so gross to you. It really sucks.

Varicose Veins You Know Where

Some women get varicose veins in their vagina area during their third trimester. It can be really alarming to wake up one morning to feel strange pressure and itching, only to check yourself and find that your lady parts are purple with giant veins that are 5 times the normal size.

This happened to me during my third pregnancy and it scared the heck out of me! It just happened all a sudden and it was really uncomfortable. The good news is that this condition almost always corrects itself right after you have the baby.

In some instances, when it doesn’t go away on its own, you may need surgery, but this is extremely rare.

Stuffy Nose

Stuffy nose is also a common issue. Your nose can feel completely plugged up, yet you cannot use any really good medication to remedy this because it’s not considered safe.

What you can do is this:

  1. Drink plenty of hydrating fluids.
  2. Elevate your head with extra pillows when you lie down to rest or sleep.
  3. Take a warm shower and linger in the steamy bathroom. …
  4. Try saline nose drops or saline nasal spray, available over the counter at drugstores.

I always ended up sleeping sitting up by the third trimester. It was the only way I could breathe and be comfy. I’d use a bunch of pillows to prop myself up. It wasn’t that easy but it was better than feeling like I was suffocating.

You’ll be Gassy

When You’re preggers your digestion will slow down to a snail’s pace. This happens so that your body can squeeze every ounce of nutrition from the food your eating.

In turn, you’ll have a lot of excess gas. Yuck, but it’s just one of those things that comes with the territory.

Snoring A Lot

Snoring is just part of it all. It happens to most pregnant women, at least by the end if not sooner. Many pregnant women start snoring because of nasal congestion, and the increase in abdominal girth causes the uterus to press on the diaphragm. Sitting up or elevated while sleeping can help a little.

Nose Bleeds Can Happen

Nose Bleeds are common during pregnancy. They happen because you have tiny blood vessels inside your nose and the increased blood volume can sometimes damage those blood vessels and cause them to burst, resulting in a nosebleed. Changes in your hormones during pregnancy can also contribute to nosebleeds. They’re not fun but for some women, it’s just part of the pregnancy life.

Hemorrhoids Are Misery

Hemorrhoids are no fun. They hurt, itch and burn and if you’re pregnant then you’ll likely get them too.

As your unborn baby grows, your uterus gets bigger and begins to press against your pelvis. This growth puts a lot of pressure on the veins near your anus and rectum, and these veins may become swollen and painful as a result. This is what causes the hemorrhoids.

Luckily you can find some relief with a good cream and a donut cushion {that you can use when you have postpartum pain too} will be a lifesaver.

Leaking When You Sneeze Or Laugh

That’s right. You’re gonna pee yourself. Those muscles have a lot of pressure down there and sometimes they just can’t take it. When you sneeze or laugh hard the sudden movement can squeeze out urine.

All you can do it practice doing Kegels to help control the problem. Yet another reason why to have that panty liner stockpile.

Your Skin Can Go Crazy

Your skin can become very reactive during your special time. From Pimples to yeast infections and mystery bumps, the list goes on. It’s just the way pregnancy treats us. All those hormones really turn your system upside down.

Luckily this too shall pass… once you have your babe.

Big O’l Nipples

Yes, your nipples are going to get bigger. Like SO MUCH bigger. This happens so that your babe can easily see and find the nipple during breastfeeding. It can be alarming but they go back to normal after childbirth and breastfeeding.

Your Feet Get Bigger

Your feet may get larger while pregnant and it may be permanent. It didn’t happen to me during my first two pregnancies but it did in my last.

A pregnant body produces the hormone relaxin, which causes your pelvic ligaments and joints to loosen, and also relaxes the ligaments in your feet, allowing the bones to separate a bit. This is why they get wider during and after pregnancy. But hey, it’s a good excuse to buy new shoes, right?

Hip Pain Is Common

Your hips may ache later in your pregnancy, especially at night. You may also feel stretching in your abdomen when you lay on your side, even early in pregnancy. This is the ligaments stretching and it can be painful and surprising.

Bringing your legs up to your chest for a few moments can relieve the muscle spasm in the ligaments.

More body Hair

You may start to grow some hair on your face during pregnancy. Many women often grow it on their bellies too. It’s pretty strange but it should go away after your babe is born. It’s just another side effect from all those hormones.

Pooping On The Table

Yes, there will be poop and there’s not much you can do about it. I’ve read the articles online about how to NOT poop on the table during labor but I’m here to tell ya that you’re going to poop.

You use the same muscles to push and the pushing is so vigorous that some of what is in your bowels WILL be expelled. Sorry.

But your docs and nurses have seen it all and if you’re worried about your husband, boyfriend or partner seeing you then maybe have them stay up top with you till the baby actually crowns. There still may be poop even at that point but it’s much less likely so there’s less of a chance of them seeing.

But you know, I’m going to guess that they already know that you poop just like them so it’s all good.

You May Get Anal Fissures

And.. Last but not least you have Anal Fissures! Many women get constipated during pregnancy and they get hard stools. This will cause anal fissures which are terrible little tears around your anus.

They will bleed and it can be quite painful. You can reduce the issue by keeping hydrated and taking a stool softener. You can reduce the pain locally when having a bowel movement by putting some vaseline around your anus to soften and lubricate.

So there’ s your list of not so talked about pregnancy side effects. Many are uncomfortable, some are gross but hey mama, you’ll have a sweet bundle of joy by the end, so it’s totally worth it. Enjoy!

What Happens With Baby First

Once your babe is born he’ll be given to you.  Skin on Skin contact is very important and you should be the first to meet your baby. You’ll get to hold your baby for a while and even try breastfeeding if that’s your plan.

I got to hold my second baby for an hour before handing him over. He latched on to the breast right away and he had no trouble at all.

After a while, they will take the baby and clean him, put ointment on his eyes and give him Vitamin K drops.

The ointment prevents eye infections and Vitamin K is important because it helps his blood clot.

After these steps are taken they will put a hospital band on your babe and then take ink footprints of him.

What Happens With You First

While you’re holding your sweet babe the nurses will begin to massage your stomach to help your birth the Placenta. This is not fun and for me, it was pretty painful.

It feels like a dull ache and more labor pains but the discomfort is numbed by the fact that you are finally holding onto your baby.

Once the placenta is out they will go ahead and cut the umbilical cord if they haven’t already. In my case, they waited till I had birthed it but it all depends.

Your doctor or midwife will begin giving you stitches if your perineum has a tear after the placenta has been birthed. They will also monitor your blood pressure and your blood loss to make sure you’re ok and that everything is going according to plan.

First 24 hours after baby

You and your baby will stay in the birthing room for two to three hours post-birth and you’ll be able to eat and clean yourself up some. Then they’ll move you to the postnatal ward for a one to two-night stay. If you had a C-section you will stay for four nights.

They want you to stay so they can monitor your recovery and watch the baby as well to make sure he’s healthy and thriving.

*** If you want things to go a specific way during the first few hours after birth be sure to include it in your birthing plan. Here’s a free one you can print out right here. Make sure everyone sees it so they all know just what you want.

So What Happens Next?

You make it to your recovery room and you’re wondering how things will go from here.

Well, first of all, you’ll get settled in and they’ll take the IV out of your arm if they haven’t already. They usually leave it in until now just in case there is an emergency or they feel the need to administer some medication to you.

Speaking of medication, You’ll feel pretty beat up during this time so when they offer your pain meds, go right ahead and take them. You’ll need them.

They’ll want you to use the bathroom pretty quickly so they can make sure everything is functioning properly. If you had an epidural they’ll wheel you in the bathroom to pee on this stand-up wheelchair device. Or perhaps a regular wheelchair depending on where you go to have your baby.

They often use the stand-up device because they want you to use your legs as quickly as possible after the epidural. It just promotes recovery and healing and it lets them know you’re alright.

It’s not fun to use the bathroom the first time. You’re likely numb and you can barely do it or you’re not and it burns like a mother. These are not fun moments but you have to get the job done.

As far as your uterus goes, you’ll be having cramps that can be as bad as labor pains. This is caused by your uterus shrinking up and the pain is worse when you breastfeed.

First 24 hours after baby

The breastfeeding causes the uterus to contract more, and that’s a good thing. It just doesn’t feel so great.

If you’re torn down there it will swell up really bad like an open rose and it is super uncomfortable. Even if you don’t tear you will be really swollen.

They’ll offer you these mesh underwear and pads along with ice packs to sit on to help keep you as clean and comfortable as possible. You will bleed heavily for the first 24 hours with some big clots.

Then after that, it will slow down some but you will bleed for about six weeks total.

Your tummy will still be pretty big and it will take some time to go down. Maybe even a couple of months, it just depends on your body.

Breastfeeding can help it shrink quicker so that’s a plus. You can help by using this special underwear or this Postpartum belt.

These will help everything shrink back into place nicely.

For added cleanliness, you can use this product right here to help you get through tough times as well.  This product is good for when you’re on your period too and you need to feel fresher.

Read this article to learn how to be more comfortable during the worst of your postpartum period.

What’s Next For Baby

Your baby will stay with you so you can bond and respond easily to their needs. You will begin your breastfeeding journey ( if you intend to do so ) at the hospital and you will practice a lot. When the baby isn’t nursing he will likely be sleeping.

Babies are very tired after birth, he will probably sleep most of those first few days, so get rest when you can.

While you are getting to know baby make sure you are skin to skin often. This releases hormones like oxytocin that are good for you both. It helps your baby thrive better too.

Your baby should be able to recognize that you’re his or her mother by the sound of your voice and heartbeat. It’s a familiar sound and it brings great comfort to your babe.

When he is awake he will hear you and likely try to turn his sweet little head towards you. When he nurses your colostrum will taste familiar like the amniotic fluid in the womb and this will also be comforting.

The staff will take your baby’s blood at some point. They usually squeeze it from the heel of the foot.

Most of the time the baby isn’t bothered by this. A couple of mine slept through it.

Other times baby may not like being squeezed at all. He may cry or fuss. Just be there to comfort him through it so he knows you are there when he needs you.

While you are in the hospital your chosen Pediatrician will come in and do an overall health exam of your baby.

This will get them started with the doc and she will see him several times over the next upcoming months. You’ll have doc appointments as much as twice weekly for the first few weeks.

If you want you can have photos done in the hospital. Most hospitals offer this so that you have photos of your newborn right after birth.

Be sure to take something nice for your baby to wear if you plan on doing this.

What You Need To Do Next

You’ll need to set up your baby’s insurance set up. You can go ahead and do this while you’re in the hospital or you can wait till you get home.

Either way, it’s a crucial next step in setting up the care of your baby, so take care of it as soon as possible. Perhaps your partner can do this so you can attend to funner things.

You’ll need to fill out a birth certificate at some point while at the facility. They give you that and some other paperwork to fill out.

They’ll also likely give you pamphlets on how to cope during postpartum depression or during periods of purple crying.

You may also receive information on breastfeeding recourses as well.

When you’re ready to leave make a double check on the car seat. Make sure it’s tight and properly installed for baby’s safety.

Once you get home you may feel a bit overwhelmed. I know I did each time I brought one of my babies home. Hormones really start to set in too. It can feel somewhat scary. But hang in there.

Make sure you have a really good support system and someone there that can help at least the first week or so. You’ll be SO grateful for them. You’ll see…

Good luck mama! I hope this was helpful.

Look For Signs Of Ovulation

Knowing the signs that ovulation is coming soon is important.

Symptoms include Variations in your body basal temperature (BBT): your BBT changes throughout your cycle; it will reach its lowest point when you ovulate, and immediately rise about half a degree. Measuring your basal body temperature first thing in the morning can help you determine your fertile window and it’s free!

You’ll also have changes in cervical mucus. When your body is approaching ovulation it will get clear and stretchy and there should be plenty of it.

Yuck, I know, but it’s a good indicator.

You may also have some cramping and you may even feel a little moody like you have mild PMS.

Pay really close to these symptoms by logging them on a free app like Clue.

Take The Supplement Vitex

Inositol is great but Vitex is the magic bullet for many women who have ovulation and hormone issues. It sure was for me!

I used it to get pregnant three times as we discussed earlier. Nothing worked for me but this and the inositol.

You have to use it for a few months to start but after that, you should be able to begin trying and you’ll likely have success!

It REALLY works well at regulating your cycle.

The brand is everything, I can tell you from experience.  I tried several brands and they didn’t make me cycle regularly. It wasn’t until I used Solary that I was getting a good, strong ovulation. This stuff WORKS!

Also, Take Evening Primrose Oil

Evening Primrose Oil is also an excellent choice to get you balanced and ready quicker too.

It works synergistically with the other two. You can find a great Primrose supplement here.

Do Full Hormonal Testing At Home

You should also run a full hormonal panel if you want to take getting pregnant seriously. You can buy and easy at-home kit that will give you a good picture of your overall hormonal health.

Everly Well has a kit you can order that will tell you everything you need to know. You can see the kits here.

And Lastly, Eat Well

A well balanced anti-inflammatory diet is very important to create overall balance in hormones and optimal health.

There’s an excellent book on cooking for hormonal balance that everyone with irregular cycles should read. It will help you immensely.

You can check out the book here.

Getting pregnant with irregular periods can seem impossible but it’s not.

You just have to give your body a bit of a nudge in the right direction.

A few simple supplements and maybe some hormonal testing and diet changes will work wonders and you’ll be pregnant before you know it!

Good luck to you!
